LIBERAL TAX CREDIT WILL ENCOURAGE THE GROWTH OF NOVA SCOTIA’S SKILLED WORKFORCE
(Halifax, NS) On Wednesday in the legislature, Liberal education critic Leo Glavine introduced a bill that would grant employers across the
province tax incentives to provide literacy education programs to their labour force.
"Employers crave a skilled, educated and motivated workforce," says Glavine. "We are providing Nova Scotia companies with the means to develop that workforce from within their existing pool of employees."
Under this legislation, employers would be eligible for tax breaks to cover the cost of adult literacy programs they implement.
"Literacy advancement is often the pivotal ingredient to GED accomplishment and even further educational achievement," states Glavine.
Glavine believes that initiatives like this one, designed to address labour market access and skills development, are key to insulating Nova Scotia for an anticipated economic downturn.
"This legislation also aims to address the hangover effect around out-migration and our aging population," Glavine contends. "As the province’s labour collective shrinks due to those factors, government must ensure that the remaining workforce is maximized both in terms of skills and education."
"It is imperative that this minority government move forward with innovative ideas designed to grow not only a new pool of skilled employees, but new skills for those Nova Scotians already with jobs."
